NOTES:
The town of Greenwich, CT, hosted their annual Greenwich Town Party on Saturday, and the celebration was highlighted by a headlining performance from blues guitar legend Eric Clapton, who capped off his set by welcoming fellow guitarists Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi. Tedeschi Trucks Band, along with Preservation Hall Jazz Band and more, also performed at the one-day festival.

Clapton, who in recent years has seriously contemplated retirement due to various health issues that have hindered his ability to perform, filled his Saturday set with a number of classics from throughout his career, kicking off with J.J. Cale’s “Somebody’s Knocking” from Clapton’s latest album I Still Do.

Along with several blues standards like Charles Segar’s “Key to the Highway,” Willie Dixon’s “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man” and Robert Johnson’s “Little Queen of Spades,” Clapton fit in his cover of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff, “White Room” from his Cream days, “Layla” (part of a run of songs featuring Clapton seated and on acoustic guitar), “Wonderful Tonight” and “Cocaine.” The set also featured “The Core,” which he played for the first time since 1978 earlier this year in Paris.

For his grand finale, Clapton and his band—which featured guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, among others—returned for an encore with special guests Trucks and Tedeschi in tow. Trucks has toured with Clapton in the past and most recently joined him on stage for Clapton’s 70th birthday celebration at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 2015. For Saturday’s encore, the collective ran through an extended rendition of “Crossroads.”
