NOTES:
Matrix Leded is another title that mixes and matches from the many different tape sources from Zeppelin’s 1973 show in Vienna. The majority of this release utilizes the first and probably the best sounding audience source used for such releases as Zig Zag Zep on Tarantura and Vienna 1973 on The Diagrams Of Led Zeppelin. The audience source that first surfaced a couple years ago and released as Wrench In The Works on Cobra is used on Matrix Leded for “The Song Remains The Same”, “The Rain Song”, and the beginning of “Dazed & Confused”. Finally a bulk of “Dazed & Confused”, “Whole Lotta Love” and “Heartbreaker” come from an excellent stereo soundboard recording (the “matrix” mentioned in the title).

Zeppelin’s tour of Europe in the spring of 1973 was very good and the recordings, especially the soundboard fragments, sound very deep, heavy and devastating. Makes one wonder why they didn’t go with this sound all the time. Many have called this concert “legendary” and it is pretty good although it is one of their most overrated concerts. Jones had stomach problems and Plant tries to make some witty comments throughout the show that fall flat. But Page seems to have a tough time hitting many bum notes in “Black Dog”, “The Rain Song”, etc. “Dazed & Confused” runs out of gas half way through. The encore “Heartbreaker” really saves this show from mediocrity, being one of the better versions on tape.

Normally I really don’t like to hear a soundboard dropped into the middle of an audience recording. Audience recordings are oftentimes much more enjoyable and the shift between the two can be very disruptive. The editing job on this release is very good and smooth in contrast to the TDOLZ version which is very disconcerting. This comes in a thick cardboard gatefold sleeve with several tour pictures and looks very nice. Overall this is a very good version and is recommended although someday I would like to hear a release that utilizes the audience sources only and not bother with the soundboard fragment.
